Let's Talk About...A Jacket for Jo

Josephine is daughter no. 3, and I decided she needed a jacket, just for her.

I had already bought the black denim classic cut jacket from a well known re-homing site, and it was waiting to be given the Hazy Made treatment. And I thought “You know what? I think this jacket will fit our Jo”.

So I looked through my fabric collection to see which fabrics inspired me for her jacket. As the jacket is black, or more accurately a washed-out black, I was looking for fabric patterns with a black background to help blend the colours together.

I found, along with various flower prints, a small piece of fabric cut up from a pair of Jo’s trousers, from her teenage years. They were strikingly patterned with an elasticated waist, tapering down to the ankle. Jo was given them as a Christmas present from her octogenarian grandmother, when she was probably 15 or 16. Now, not everyone’s grandmother has the ability to buy clothes for their teenage granddaughter, and I admire her optimism, but this time she hit the mark. They were from M&S, but really didn’t fit the usual M&S brand. Jo loved them, and wore them until they no longer could be worn.

So I cut them up and added them to the pile. And here we are, at least 10 years after the trousers were discarded, being re-used and re-purposed for Jo’s personalised jacket. Jo loves her new jacket, and loves that her memories are sewn into it.

If you have your own favourite fabrics and would like them to be used on your own jacket, send me an email (hazel@hazymade.co.uk) or DM me on Instagram (@hazy.made) and we can have a chat.
