Let's Talk About.... Matilda

My lovely friend Sue was having a bit of a clear out, and passed on to me some left-over cotton curtain fabric that she had made up herself, but no longer needed the off cuts.

So here is Matilda, a forest green utility denim jacket embellished and appliquéd with some of Sue’s fabric. As it is off cuts the fabric is as good as new and the colours ‘pop’, as they say.

If you think of the name Matilda you probably imagine the Rold Dahl story and the talented Tim Minchin musical. Or you could think of our ‘Warrior Queen’ of the 12th century.

Matilda was the only surviving heir when her father King Henry died. Instead of backing his daughter to rule England, his dying wish was that his nephew Stephen should be king. Stephen was duly coronated, as he was the grandson of William The Conqueror.  Matilda was furious and spent the whole of Stephen’s reign at war with him, known as ‘The Anarchy’, as chaos abounded in England. After Stephen’s death, Matilda’s son Henry became King, known as Henry ll, and the House of the Plantagenets ruled England for over 300 years, ending with the death of Richard lll.

So perhaps Matilda won after all.
